Sort

Increasing sorting capacities

Sorting is a pivotal step in the recovery process of used textiles and footwear.

It is at this stage that operators direct the waste toward its second life: reuse, recycling, solid recovered fuel (SRF), or energy recovery.

In 2023 and 2024, development support mechanisms for sorting operators led to a 10% increase in sorted volumes, despite a challenging context caused by the collapse of international outlets and the drop in second-hand resale prices.

To address this crisis, Refashion released an exceptional additional support of €31 per tonne sorted for the year 2024, representing a total envelope of €6 million fully funded by producers. This emergency aid had a dual objective: to relieve sorting operators by compensating for the additional costs incurred in 2024 and to improve conditions in the field by maintaining or restoring more regular collection levels and/or reopening certain drop-off points.

Beyond this short-term response, Refashion has maintained its long-term commitment to supporting collection and sorting stakeholders in addressing the challenges they face — notably by fostering the development of more efficient sorting units tailored to the needs of the sector.
